about

Closed for modification of the source code, but open for extension.
Despite the strict structure, the written score is a sketched idea aimed to inspire the final composition and arrangement by playing it live. It allows showing the musical individualism of the trio members through creating the final form of the pieces.
Close, closing, closure, lockdown… During pandemics, we heard these expressions repetitively. While I was physically and mentally locked, I began transferring the meanings of these words to the language of music. I wanted to check if they can trigger musical associations and if so, can they work as music worth listening to.
While working on the music, I found a phrase in IT terminology: open-closed principle. Its' definition reminded me of the composition and arrangement technique of our jazz combo practices. The final shape of music is created on the spot through arrangement ideas, improvisation, and reaction to the written score. No matter how far we move in the final sound, the original concept remains recognizable. We play around with the material until we record the compositions.
Almost every piece is based on my earlier compositions or ideas. I see it as a natural creative process – some of the themes stay with us for years, as long as they have something new to tell us. It's always interesting to see how musicians deal with rigid musical structures. Sometimes they rebel and create in opposition to the score. In the luckiest of situations, the original ideas inspire them to find freedom through their variations, reactions, improvisations, and playing with musical phrases.

N.B. The recordings were realized thanks to the stipend awarded by Nemzeti Kulturális Alap / National Cultural Fund, Hungary
