Most of the pieces on the album overture et al. by Bence Vas & Big Band have strict musical structure inspired by studying the basics of Bartók’s compositional technique. This creates a rather interesting clash with the improvised parts implemented in the compositions (which were performed by outstanding musicians such as Gábor Cseke and Kristóf Bacsó).

An extended big band line up with Hammond organ can be heard on the recording. The organ serves mostly as a bass instrument, background, with just a little soloing. The album features some of the best musicians of the Hungarian jazz and contemporary classical music scene. Most of them are from the Modern Art Orchestra (MAO), with Dániel Dinnyés serving as a conductor. Overture et al. was recorded in the famous Pannonia Studio - a historical home of Hungarian film and film music productions in Budapest.
The music was composed during the pandemic and lockdown when little was left from usual creative activities. Working on the music was a lifeline during these challenging times. Closed in a house surrounded by nature, observing the changes of lights, forms, colours I tried transforming my impressions into a painting of sounds. Kołysanka and Overture at Late Afternoon, are dedicated to the two closest people to me who gave inspiration and strength throughout this difficult period.

Lush brass peeks out and pop in odd rhythms with great interplay between the well written parts. The music is advanced but not afraid to lay on a greasy chord now and then. Bence's pieces patiently develop and build then explode in a cascade of harmony; very engaging to listen to.”
